A More Conscious Way of Responding to Life
Life does not always happen the way we want it to. We can be hurt, rejected, betrayed, disappointed or frightened. Relationships can become difficult. People can behave in ways we believe are unfair or unacceptable. Sometimes circumstances change in ways we cannot control. What happens next can become an automatic emotional reaction —
anger, resentment, anxiety, withdrawal, unhappiness or emotional distress. For more than twenty-five years of working with people, I became increasingly interested in what happens
between the event and our emotional response to it. That work led me to recognise a recurring emotional process that I call
RIPP — Resistance, Injustice, Powerlessness and Pain.
STOP RIPPing® is about learning to recognise that process as it happens, so that an automatic emotional reaction can become a
more conscious response.
Different Problems. The Same Underlying Process.
People come to me for very different reasons. One person may be struggling with anger that is damaging their relationships or affecting the way they feel about themselves. A couple may be caught in recurring cycles of arguments, resentment, withdrawal or disconnection. Someone else may be experiencing anxiety, grief, stress, persistent unhappiness or another form of emotional distress. The circumstances may be very different, but over more than twenty-five years I have repeatedly seen the same underlying emotional process appearing beneath them.
Resistance. Injustice. Powerlessness. Pain. Understanding that process does not mean denying what has happened to you, excusing somebody else's behaviour or pretending that something painful is okay. It means becoming more conscious of
what is happening within you in response to it. And with greater awareness comes greater choice in how you respond.
How Can I Be Okay When Things Are Not Okay?
This question lies at the heart of STOP RIPPing®. Being okay does not mean that what happened was okay. It does not mean accepting mistreatment, suppressing emotion, giving up or pretending not to care. It means discovering that difficult circumstances — and the behaviour of other people — do not always have to determine your emotional state.
This may not be okay. But I can be. That possibility is what I mean by
emotional freedom.
Three Ways STOP RIPPing® Can Help
Anger Management
If anger is affecting your relationships, family life or sense of who you are, we look beneath the anger to understand the emotional process that is driving it. The aim is not simply to teach you techniques for controlling anger. It is to help you recognise and interrupt the process that produces the angry response.

Relationships
Relationships can become caught in repeating patterns of conflict, resentment, defensiveness and withdrawal. Rather than deciding who is right and who is wrong, we look at what is happening between you and how each person's emotional reactions may be keeping the cycle going.

Emotional Freedom
RIPP is not only about anger. For more than twenty-five years, I have used this approach with people experiencing many different forms of emotional distress, including anxiety, depression, grief, OCD, PTSD, stress and persistent unhappiness. The starting point is not a label. It is understanding what is happening within you and helping you become more conscious of the patterns that may be contributing to your emotional suffering.

From Automatic Reaction to Conscious Response
You do not need to believe in a theory, adopt a particular philosophy or spend months analysing your past before you can begin recognising RIPP. We work with
what is happening in your life now. The situations that trigger you. The thoughts and feelings that follow. The sense that something should not be happening. The struggle to make reality different from the way it is. And the emotional pain that can follow when you cannot. Once you begin to recognise that process while it is happening, something important becomes possible:
You can begin to respond rather than simply react.
Working With Me
I'm Gary Redmond, creator of the RIPP approach. For more than twenty-five years I have worked one-to-one with people experiencing anger, relationship difficulties and a wide range of emotional problems. My approach is practical, personal and focused. We do not spend the first session talking about what we might eventually work on.
We begin working with what is happening in your life from the start. Sessions are private, one-to-one and online. Each full one-hour session is
£150, pay as you go, with no package to purchase and no commitment to a predetermined number of sessions. You decide after each session whether another would be useful.
